pierwszej połowie XX wieku termin bakelit stał się praktycznie synonimem tworzyw sztucznych, a od czasu pojawienia się jego termoplastycznych następców, język potoczny używa tej nazwy do odróżnienia starych, ciężkich tworzyw termoutwardzalnych (melaminy, żywice fenolowe) od tego, co mniej lub bardziej lekceważąco nazywa po prostu „tworzywami sztucznymi”. Bakelite nie jest jednak nazwą rodzajową, lecz marką, w przeciwieństwie do tego, co wszyscy zakładają na podstawie powszechnego używania, a mianowicie jednej z Bakelite AG w Iserlohn (która, ponieważ jej spółka macierzysta, Rütgerwerke, sprzedała ją Borden Chemical w 2005 r. cieszył się naprzemiennymi statkami-matkami amerykańskich firm chemicznych i jest obecnie własnością Momentive Specialty Chemicals). Prowadzi to do problemu terminologicznego: bakelit jest termoutwardzalny, ale nie każdy termoutwardzalny jest bakelitem. Musimy więc rozróżnić: czarno-białe serie przełączników są formowane z tworzyw termoutwardzalnych, ale tylko czarna seria jest bakelitem w znaczeniu znaku towarowego, podczas gdy biała seria jest formowana z pokrewnej żywicy.
